Thames Water asked a team of researchers to estimate the number of people living in the capital. They explain their bafflement when it ended up on the front pages.
You can chastise the Telegraph for getting its numbers wrong, but Portes saying it’s “my instinct” the numbers are wrong doesn’t do much for the prosecution case.

I have to fill out an enormous number of impertinent surveys from the ONS every month, rather than them obtaining the data from other government departments we already report to (HMRC, for instance), so forgive me if I don't think thus will ever happen. (If anyone from the ONS is reading this, your surveys are a time wasting drain on business resources and you should learn to play nicely with other government departments for the information you need).

In fact, the relevancy of the post spreading like wildfire relates to a recent post from Jay Van Bavel. He said that even if posts are fact checked, those with biases will still find ways to use it to their advantage and rag all over it.
